Missouri has been one of the surprises of the season, and can virtually wrap up the division with a win against South Carolina this afternoon. The Tigers lost quarterback James Franklin and cornerback E.J. Gaines to injury during their 41-26 victory over then-No. 7 Georgia on Oct. 12, but the team was able to win without them last week against then-No.22 Florida at home with a 36-17 victory at home
Their replacements filled in masterfully last week as quarterback Maty Mauk led eight scoring drives and corner Aarian Pinton gained his first interception.
"You came to perform at the college level," Mauk told ESPN. "It kind of is nerve-wracking, but at the same time, it's what you're here to do."
South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw left with a sprained left knee last week and the team managed just 15 total yards over the final 15 minutes without him.
On the season, Shaw is 92-for-145 (63.4%) for 1,307 yards with 11 touchdowns and one interception. Dylan Thompson is expected to take over under center and he has gone 29-for-51 (56.9%) for 421 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Shaw is expected to need two to three weeks to fully recover, but Carolina hasn't ruled out the fact that he may suit up and play at a pinch.
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier hopes that his team will be able to get back into the division hunt with a win in its first ever trip to Missouri.
"It's a game that's going to decide whether or not we're in the division hunt or not. Simple as that. I think all of our players know that," he said via ESPN.
Missouri will look to continue its magical season while South Carolina fights to stay in the division hunt when these teams go head-to-head tonight.
