Tonight at 9:30 p.m. the Washington Capitals (4-5, 8 points) will travel to Edmonton to take on the Oilers (3-6-1, 7 points) in NHL action that can be live streamed here. Caps fans can hear the game on the radio by tuning in to WJFK 106.7, while Oilers fans can listen on CHED-AM 630.
The top priority for Edmonton, especially with rumors swirling of their desire to upgrade at goaltender, is controlling Capitals scorer Alex Ovechkin. Ovechkin's start to the year is among the best of his career; he leads the Caps with 13 points, and he's scored an NHL-high nine goals.
"You've got to get in positions where you can get the puck and score," Ovechkin said. "The most important thing, if I shoot and score goals, is that we win the game. It's working right now." After a tough start, Ovechkin's brilliance has helped Washington win three of their last four games. Still, coach Adam Oates expects more from his team after a sloppy win in Winnipeg.
"We made every mistake you can make basically in the course of the game," Oates said. "(Edmonton has) the fastest rink in the league and you've got to be prepared for that. It's a mental adjustment."
Edmonton is struggling along at the outset of this year, but they scored a rousing victory over the Montreal Canadiens after their winger Lars Eller called them a "junior team."
"When you've got some young player who's trying to get his feet wet calling an organization a junior team, people take notice," coach Dallas Eakins said. "I knew it was going to turn. It makes for great banter in our dressing room."
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins believes that game could be a turning point in this season. "It's what we needed at that point," Nugent-Hopkins said. "We were losing battles, we weren't playing with the passion that we need to win games in that situation."
