New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes will miss the rest of the football season after injuring his foot in Sunday's game.

The team confirmed reports of a Lisfranc foot injury, which will keep him out for the rest of the season.

A report from Albert Breer on NFL.com did not sound optimistic for Holmes.

"The injury is to Holmes' left foot, and it's uncertain whether or not he has a break. Holmes got the opinions of multiple doctors on the injury, and they are comparing notes and should have a final answer for the Jets on Wednesday morning."

According to reports from league sources, which were confirmed by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter and ESPN.com's John Clayton, Holmes is expected to miss the rest of the season after suffering a Lisfranc injury in his foot, resulting in torn ligaments. Surgery can take numerous months to recover from.

Holmes will underwent testing on Wednesday and is done for the year.

The injury would be another large blow for the Jets, who lost All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis to a season ending ACL injury in week three. Revis was injured on a non-contact play when he tried to change directions to make a tackle on Miami running back Daniel Thomas.

The Jets didn't place Revis on injured reserve yet, still clinging to the chance that he could come back if the team made a run to the Super Bowl.

That possibility is becoming ever more unlikely after Holmes' injury.

It is widely believed that Holmes is New York's primary playmaker and deep threat, and his injury will only hurt an offense that has scored just 33 points in the last two weeks. Making matters worse, the Jets only rank 27th in the league in passing yards, and that was done with Holmes in the lineup.

Holmes left the game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in the fourth quarter after catching a short pass. He went down quickly as he turned to run and was wearing crutches after the game. Adding insult to injury literally, Holmes was untouched after the injury, and completely gave up the ball, allowing Carolos Rogers to score a touchdown.

In response to the injury, the Jets signed wide receiver Jason Hill according to John Clayton at ESPN. Last season with the Jaguars, hill had three touchdowns and 25 receptions for 367 yards.

The Jets' roster isn't very deep at the position, with Jeremy Kerley and Chaz Schilens as the two starting receivers. The team also has rookie Stephen Hill and Clyde Gates. Holmes has amassed 20 catches for 272 yards and touchdown this season.

Holmes has been a frustrating and polarizing player since he was acquired by the Jets in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is a dynamic player with great skills, but at times can lose focus and not buy into the "team" concept.

He won a Super Bowl MVP award after catching the game-winning touchdown in Super Bowl XLIII and then put up his best statistical season in 2009, catching 79 balls for 1,248 yards and five touchdowns.

Even though he performed well on the field, Holmes was shipped out of Pittsburgh due to legal troubles with marijuana, bad behavior and attitude issues.

Those same attitude issues arose with the Jets, including during the final game of last season when Holmes got into an argument on the field with offensive tackle Wayne Hunter in the fourth quarter against Miami. He was benched for the rest of the game, which the Jets eventually lost, causing them to miss the postseason.

Even worse for the Jets, according to ESPNNewYork.com, San Francisco cornerback Carlos Rogers said on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Tuesday that he thought New York quit at the end of their 34-0 loss on Sunday.

Yeah, you could see it happening," Rogers told SiriusXM NFL Radio. "It kind of shocked me because a lot of guys on (our) sideline were saying, 'They don't want to tackle, they don't want to do this, they don't want to do that.' That's a Rex Ryan defense. That's a Rex Ryan team ... and his defense, you know, plays throughout. That was the shocking point about it."

Rogers had a touchdown in the game off of a 51-yard fumble recovery and also added three tackles.

While the Holmes injury is bad for the Jets, the idea that they quit during the game is even more damaging. Sure, they were losing badly, but one thing NFL fans do not want to hear about their team is that they are quitters.

The Jets are still 2-2 and are tied for the AFC East division lead, but it will take an uphill battle to make the playoffs after losing two of their most dynamic players for the season.
