Antonio Margarito News: More Medical Tests Needed Before El Tornado De Tijuana Can Fight Jorge Paez Jr. [VIDEO]

Antonio Margarito is looking forward to facing Jorge Paez Jr. next month at the Mexico City Arena -- his first fight after more than four years.

A right eye injury suffered against Manny Pacquiao grounded his career. The same eye swelled up when the former champion faced Miguel Cotto, which led to his untimely retirement in 2011.

Though he claims his eye is fully healed, the Boxing Commission of Mexico City is still requiring the 37-year-old to undergo special medical tests as a precautionary measure.

"They will ask for what is usually done, things that are required of any fighter who comes in [from outside Mexico], but Dr. Esteban Martos has requested that given the history of Margarito after the fight with Manny Pacquiao, the injury he had to the one eye -- he needs to give him a special evaluation," said committee chairman Ciro Nucci via Boxingscene.com

While it may look like the commission is stepping in to possibly stop the fight, Nucci adds that it should be seen more of looking out for the welfare of the fighter.

"We are not trying to prevent a fighter from stepping into the ring. We are here to protect the health of those in boxing. We have no other interest than to make sure everything is fine," he adds.

Margarito is upbeat on his return and was looking as far as possibly getting a third fight with Cotto and possibly face Canelo Alvarez.

“I know Cotto has said no, but I’ll go on insisting, and I would like to fight against Canelo,” Margarito said via Boxing News 24.

Spirited and rejuvenated as Margarito sounds, not too many are convinced that he may get that far. In fact some claim that they wouldn’t be surprised if Margarito loses to Paez in his return bout, assuming he does pass all the medicals.
