Dallas Cowboys, RG3 Rumors: Jerry Jones Should Ignore Former Heisman Trophy Winner If He's Content As A Backup [VIDEO]

The rumors about Robert Griffin III landing in Dallas as a backup are gaining steam, especially after Cowboys legend Troy Aikman speculated that either Griffin or Johnny Manziel would be backing up Tony Romo in 2016, per Sports Illustrated.

Griffin’s former coach at Baylor, Art Briles, called Griffin to Dallas a “dream” situation. “You could have a dream. That would probably be making it come true. That would be a great place for him. It’s a great organization; being back in Texas and with the Cowboys and having a chance to get in there under Romo for three years. Not that they need to sell tickets, but it wouldn’t hurt ticket sales,” Briles told the Dallas Morning News.

Robert Griffin's Best Landing Spot Is Ironically The Rams

If Briles’ assessment of Griffin is correct – and Griffin hasn’t commented on Briles’ remarks – then Cowboys owner Jerry Jones should look elsewhere. Bringing on RGIII is a risky move. He’s Texas-born and won a Heisman in Texas, so fans will want to see him play if Tony Romo shows signs of wear and tear. Romo also reportedly plans on playing another four years; that should be torture for Griffin, a former No. 2 overall pick.

If Griffin is content to sit behind Romo for that long, it’s fair to wonder about his competitive spirit, and whether or not he is the type of player who can eventually be the face of a Super Bowl contender. Some players can benefit from time behind a veteran, but Griffin is a former Rookie of the Year with 35 career starts.

Not One Team Called The Redskins At The Trade Deadline About RGIII

Dallas didn’t like life with Brandon Weeden and Matt Cassel as backups, but the grass won’t be greener with Griffin if his fire has been that put out by his bad time with the Redskins.
