Stephen Curry and Draymond Green were just chilling out on the bench during yet another blowout, and made a tiny inside joke that they probably doubted would be caught by the cameras. Green appears to smoke a marijuana cigarette, and then pass it to Curry, who at first seems confused, then plays along.

The joke was mostly harmless; yes, kids watch and may see it, but it’s not egregious. Except it would be if Cam Newton had done it. Newton, whose worst crimes on the field involve doing popular dances in the end zone, and handing game balls to young children, has generated all kinds of vitriol.

Stephen Curry's Wife Responds To A Horny Fan

The Titans looked ready to fight him after he busted some moves; they had a bit of a point, because Newton was dancing a lot. But for years Newton has had it thrown back in his face, whether it be his Superman celebration or his new “dab” dance. He’s had angry moms write in to newspapers that his “gyrating” sets a bad example for kids, despite cheerleaders right next to him gyrating with fewer clothes on.

Draymond Green May Actually Be The Warriors MVP

Curry dances too. He shimmys after making 3-pointers, celebrates wildly with his teammates, and generally has fun doing amazing, athletic things. But the NBA has reached a point where demonstrative players are rewarded for the passion. Few athletes have the visibility of NBA players, and the league is capitalizing on their personality.

Newton may pave the way for future players like him, but for now, he’s got to endure the arrows. Luckily, he’s a smiling standard-bearer. He’s going to dab on them no matter what anyone says. And if he gets a ring, the conversation will change.
