Eugenie Bouchard is making her country pay now instead of paying later.

The Canadian tennis star has backed out of the Canada's first-round Fed Cup match against Belarus, according to Canadian website Sportsnet.

After falling in the second round of the Australian Open to Victoria Azarenka, Bouchard has committed herself to her comeback.

Once the No. 5 player in the world, Bouchard fell to No. 49 after missing the final three months of 2015 due to the concussion she suffered at the U.S. Open.

Bouchard has had a promising beginning to 2016, winning seven of her 10 matches and climbing back up to No. 37 prior to the start of the Australian Open.

"I am disappointed to not play Fed Cup next week in Quebec City," Bouchard said Wednesday on Twitter. "Because of my shortened off-season due to my injury, I am still working on getting back into top form and preparing for the rest of the year and to represent my country in the Olympics this summer.

"I always look forward to playing in front of my Canadian fans and wish my teammates the best of luck."

So she's not playing for Canada now because she wants to represent Canada later in the Olympics -- and compete for a medal in the process.

Give Bouchard credit for wanting to re-establish herself among the world's top players. She's not resting on her 2014 laurels, when she advanced to the semifinals of three Grand Slam events, including a finals appearance at Wimbledon.

Perhaps, Bouchard's crash in 2015, when she won just 5-of-23 matches between her quarterfinal showing at the Australian Open and her three wins at the U.S. Open before withdrawing from her fourth-round match against Roberta Vinci because of the concussion she suffered after slipping on a slick physiotherapy room floor.

So while Canada wins and loses, Bouchard hopes to win a lot more than she loses in 2016.
