Albert Pujols, who is suing ex-Cardinals slugger Jack Clark for defamation after Clark intimated Pujols had used performance-enhancing drugs, will not be taking any lie detector tests to prove he's telling the truth.
Pujols' lawyers shot down the possibility of the Angels slugger sitting down for a polygraph test to prove the validity of his claims. Martin Singer, Pujols' lead attorney, told The St. Louis Dispatch, that sworn testimony and "not inadmissible polygraphs and absurd publicity ploys -- is what counts." Earlier this week Clark's attorney Al Watkins proposed both men sit down for lie detector tests and do away with the suit.
These hysterics were caused by remarks Clark made on a radio show during the regular season. When asked about rumors that Pujols used steroids, Clark said "I know for a fact he was. "[Chris] Mihlfeld had told me what he was doing with 'Poolie' - threw him batting practice, worked him out, shot him up, all that stuff." He also said Mihlfeld said he "shot him up."
Mihlfeld was also the personal trainer for ex-MLB relief pitcher Jason Grimsley, an admitted PED user.
Pujols vehemently denied the rumors in a statement that read: "I've said time and time again that I would never take, or even consider taking, anything illegal. I've been tested hundreds of times throughout my career and never once have I tested positive. It is irresponsible and reckless for Jack Clark to have falsely accused me of using PEDs. My faith in Jesus Christ, and my respect for the game are too important to me, I would never be able to look my wife or kids in the eye if I had done what this man is accusing me of."
At the time news broke of this controversy, Mihlfeld also distanced himself from Clark's comments.
"I haven't even talked to Jack Clark in close to 10 years," Mihlfeld told reporters. "His statements are simply not true. I have known Albert Pujols since he was 18 years old and he never used illegal drugs in any way. I would bet my life on it and probably drop dead on the spot if I found out he was."
