Johnny Manziel is on the outs in Cleveland, and while rumors are hot that he wants to go to the Cowboys and be back home in Texas, it’s questionable whether or not the Cowboys need the headache.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wants the team to invest in a quality backup quarterback, but Manziel is unlikely to arrive in Dallas and be content with a backup role for very long. That would be a problem, because apparently Tony Romo believes he has another presidential term in his right arm.

"He has four years left. He's going to win a Super Bowl. Don't worry about this,” Cousin Sal, a frequent guest on Bill Simmons’ weekly podcast said after he and Simmons spent time with Romo over the weekend.

"He said that," Simmons replied. "He said he has at least four." If Romo has four years left, that doesn’t make Dallas a very appetizing destination for Manziel if he has his heart set on being a starting quarterback.

Then there’s the issue of his off-field behavior. Manziel spent the last two years winding up in tabloid headlines for partying and drinking, even though he spent last offseason in rehab. Manziel was even foolish enough to don a fake wig and mustache and party in Las Vegas before the Browns’ Week 17 game. Manziel had been ruled out of that game because he was in the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Going further than his off-field trouble, of which there’s plenty, Manziel hasn’t proven anything on the gridiron. Aside from some flashy connections with Travis Benjamin, Manziel has been shaky under center for the Browns, lacking in accuracy, and vulnerable to injury.

Romo has become more fragile as he’s aged, so Jones is right to seek a quality backup. Bringing Manziel aboard fills that need in narrative only. He’s a well-known quarterback, but saying he is better than Matt Cassel or Brandon Weeden is a tough sell.
