The Silver and Black may have been stabbed in the back.

In advance of todays NFL owners meeting in Houston, a strong sentiment to pair the Rams and Chargers franchises in the Inglewood stadium project is growing, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Rams, Chargers May Have Met To Discuss Stadium Partnership

"Multiple league officials and owners not involved with the Inglewood project, or the competing proposal in Carson, say there is momentum to pair the two franchises in what one owner describes as a 'transformational' project backed by the Rams," The Times is reporting.

The one glitch, according to the report, is how to make the proposal work without making it look as though Chargers owner Dean Spanos reneged on his deal with Raiders owner Mark Davis on their Carson stadium plan.

NFL Relocation Committees Know Which Plan They Will Recommend

"The league insiders, who spoke on the condition they not be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter, say Spanos doesn't want to be seen as turning his back on a partner," The Times reported. "This makes the path to what is emerging as the preferred pairing more difficult. But the insiders believe the matter can be resolved during the special meeting that starts Tuesday in Houston, where owners hope to find an answer to the two-decade L.A. vacancy."

The Times went on to suggest that the owners will make a proposal to the Raiders to ensure they will find relief from their current situation in Oakland, even though that could set a dangerous precedent if other teams want to explore relocation.

The Raiders may stay in Oakland but find other -- and presumably better -- opportunities in San Diego, St. Louis or even Santa Clara, if the 49ers agree to get involved with prospects for their new stadium.

A Chargers spokesman reached out to The Times after Jerry Jones' letter to the NFL relocation committees was made public and wanted the newspaper to reiterate Spanos' unwillingness to work with Stan Kroenke in a letter Spanos sent to the L.A. committee last month.

"Nothing in Stan's letter gives me any reason to reconsider my partnership with Mark Davis and our chosen stadium site," Spanos wrote.
