These two teams enter the championship game evenly matched, even if Alabama’s history is far richer than Clemson’s. The Tigers have the offensive edge, ranking 27th in college football and averaging 35.8 points per game, while Alabama ranks 44th, and scored 32 points on average. Defensively, ‘Bama has a bigger edge, ranking first in the nation in points allowed (12.5 points). Clemson isn’t too far behind, surrendering 18.7 points, and ranking 13th in the country.

Both teams feature a Heisman Trophy candidate; DeShaun Watson stars as a two-way QB for the Tigers, throwing for 3,704 yards and piling up 1,032 on the ground, accounting for 43 total touchdowns. Alabama running back Derrick Henry actually won the Heisman, posting a 2,065-yard campaign along with 25 touchdowns.

Unfortunately for Clemson, Alabama coach Nick Saban said he thinks his team is geared up for this game much more than they were last season in an upset loss in the College Football Playoff to Ohio State. "Last year we sort of just participated in the game," he told ESPN. "This year, we really wanted to make a statement and do something special." That was before they destroyed Michigan State 38-0.

Clemson, however, is just as confident, and they have gone all year without losing. "I knew that we would be here," Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said. "It was just a matter of when."
