Robert Griffin III’s Redskins are in the playoffs, hosting the Packers in the Wildcard round, but Griffin himself has not contributed at all to their success. Griffin’s spent 2015 in sweatpants on game day as the third-string quarterback behind Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy.
His time in Washington seems like it’s coming to an end, and most rumors have him going to Dallas to be a primary backup to Tony Romo, in the same state where he won a Heisman trophy with Baylor. Ironically enough, however, it’s the Rams that offer the best hopes for RGIII’s future.
The Redskins Received Zero Calls At The Trade Deadline For RGIII
In 2012 the Rams had the No. 2 overall pick, but traded it to the Redskins for a treasure trove of draft picks that have filled out St. Louis’ roster. Meanwhile, the Redskins have operated at a draft pick deficit since then, and Griffin isn’t even suiting up.
For all the Rams’ depth though, they still don’t have an answer at QB. The time may have come for them to offer something to Washington – even though it would be exponentially less than their 2012 haul – to try and work it out with Griffin.
Kirk Cousins At The Forefront Of 2016 Free Agency
RGIII isn’t a total lost cause. It’s easy to forget now, but he beat out Andrew Luck in 2012 for the Rookie of the Year, and threw 20 touchdown passes while rushing for more than 800 yards and another seven scores. Since then he’s declined precipitously, but many of his issues stemmed from serious injuries. He also threw for 3,000 yards in both of his full seasons as the Redskins starter.
Most importantly, Griffin is not Case Keenum, Nick Foles, or Sam Bradford. It can hardly be argued that Griffin has a higher ceiling than any quarterback the Rams have trotted out since 2012, and the cost to acquire him has dwindled to a late-round pick. While the world focuses on RGIII’s race with Johnny Manziel to be a backup in Dallas, the Rams should quietly work the phones to land what may be their quarterback of the future.
