The next mega fight involving Gennady Golovkin and Canelo ‘Saul’ Alvarez is likely to take some time to materialize with both fighters taking on voluntary fights before sitting down and making it happen.

The WBC relaxed its stance and allowed the two camps alternate bouts before facing each other, which gives them space for fight negotiations.

As far as Alvarez is concerned, he already has a date in mind (Cinco De Mayo weekend) though no names have been mentioned thus far.

But progress on the side of Golovkin seems to be better with Billy Joe Saunders as the eyed opponent. Saunders won the WBO middleweight title over Andy Lee last month via the Irish Independent.

ESPN reports that the handlers of both Golovkin and Saunders are currently in talks which could see a possible fight between the two this coming April.

"We made a significant offer to Frank Warren as it is still GGG's priority to unify all the middleweight titles," says Loeffler of K2 promotions via ESPN. "The unification fight with Billy Joe Saunders would be at the top of the list for the next fight. They are interested but no response yet."

It remains to be seen how this develops, though Frank Warren, the promoter of Saunders, believes it may all boil down to how much money is on the table.

“I know Billy Joe has intimated he may not be quite ready for this but money talks louder than anything in boxing and such are the sums involved it is one certainly worth considering,” Warren said via ESPN.

Saunders is still on break, though Warren adds that the British boxer does have plenty of options on who he could face next.
