Kobe Bryant is back from his trip to Germany for special treatment on his troublesome knee and again is pronouncing himself "ahead of schedule" in his rehab from a torn Achilles.
Bryant joined his teammates on the bench in Ontario, Ca. for their 90-88 preseason win over Denver. "I feel very fortunate to be at this stage," Bryant told ProBasketballTalk.com. "I feel like I'm ahead of schedule."
Coach Mike D'Antoni also found it hard to hide his excitement. "He said it went great, feels good." D-Antoni again described the treatment the 35-year-old All-Star guard underwent as a maintenance procedure similar to what he twice underwent in 2011.
ProBasketball adds that two hours before tipoff Bryant got off the team bus with a small box of cupcakes in his hand. Bryant dressed in his team warm-ups as he energitically sat on the bench. Three weeks before the season-opener, the team insist there is still no formal timetable for his return to play.
After losing Dwight Howard to Houston in free agency, the Lakers have composed a roster seemingly more in D-Antoni's up-tempo image. The team signed Xavier Henry, Jordan Farmer, Nick Young and Wesley Johnson over the summer. They also inked journeyman center Chris Kaman to help fill the void left by Howard's departure.
