The last two major UFC cards have ended in shocking fashion. First, at UFC 193, Ronda Rousey’s mystique was shattered by Holly Holm, a major underdog who entered the octagon and used her superior striking to confound, and eventually eviscerate Rousey. Holm took Rousey’s perfect record from her, became the women’s bantamweight champion, and knocked Rousey out of action for at least six months.
Then, at UFC 194, Conor McGregor took the UFC featherweight title from Jose Aldo, who hadn’t lost since 2005. McGregor was a slight favorite in the bout, but it wasn’t the victory that was so stunning. It was that he knocked Aldo out in a mere 13 seconds.
