Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel is expected to miss several weeks of action after suffering a sprained LCL in the team's 37-24 Thursday night loss to the Cleveland Browns.
In the same game that Browns starting quarterback Brian Hoyer suffered a season-ending torn ACL, Manuel was hurt while scampering for a 14-yard gain on a critical third-and-eight play in the third quarter.
Manuel immediately grabbed his right knee and had to be helped from the field after Cleveland's Tashaun Gipson delivered his big hit along the Buffalo sideline.
For the Bills, the timing of Manuel's injury couldn't be worse. At the time, the team was knotted in a 17-17 tie with the Browns, but his extended absence will now likely mean the Bills will be forced to rely on undrafted rookie free agent Jeff Tuel.
The Bills upcoming schedule includes tilts with Cincinnati, Miami (3-1), New Orleans and Kansas City, currently a combined 13-3.
Buffalo coach Doug Marrone has indicated the team might be open to looking outside the organization in signing another quarterback and some have speculated recently released Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman might be an option.
Freeman threw for a career-high 4,065 yards and 27 touchdowns for the Bucs last season.
