The Dodgers took Game 1 of the five-game set behind a masterful effort from Clayton Kershaw, who gave up one run while setting down 12 on strikes. Today, they'll send out Zack Greinke to face off with Mike Minor of Atlanta.
Minor will need to get his first inning issues behind him, after surrendering seven runs in the first inning over his last four appearances. "Everybody has talked about it," Minor said. "I think teams have been really aggressive towards me. I throw a lot of strikes, so they don't want to get deep in the count. I think the biggest thing tomorrow is going to be nerves, trying to settle myself down and have a good first inning, throw strikes, and get my breaking stuff working early on."
Over his last 12 starts, if one were to cover up the name above the stats, that person might think they're peering at Kershaw's numbers. Since July 20th, Greinke has posted a 1.58 ERA, second only to Kershaw's.
"They've got a bunch of power, and you kind of have to locate your pitches," Greinke said. "So I think those are the two main things. If you don't locate them, they could do some damage."
Manager Don Mattingly said that there isn't much difference between his confidence level when sending Greinke to the hill and when Kershaw is out there.
"With Zack, we feel pretty much like Clayton, you feel like he's going to keep you in the game, so he's going to give us a chance," Mattingly said. "If we can put some runs up for him and make some plays, we're going to be in a position to at least be in a close game that you've got a chance to win."
