It's a divorce that has not benefited either party. And now one of them may want to rectify the situation.

Eagles running back DeMarco Murray's recent meeting with owner Jeffrey Lurie about Chip Kelly's use -- or lack thereof -- of the 2014 NFL leading rusher is a step in the process of Murray hoping to be released in hopes or returning to the Cowboys, Bleacher Report's Jason Cole says.

"This is a way (NFL executives) believe Murray is trying to get out of Philadelphia and ultimately return to the Dallas Cowboys," Cole said.

Murray can't just ask for a trade, Cole continues, because he has $31 million left on his contract over the next four years, including $9 million guaranteed, and the Cowboys would be less inclined to reacquire his services.

Not to mention the fact that the Philadelphia and Dallas would make for strange bedfellows in any trade discussions as NFC East rivals.

It would be up to Kelly to decide whether to eat the $9 million over two seasons and cut Murray, perhaps knowing that a Murray reunion with the Cowboys would be a probability.

So far, Kelly has made questionable moves as general manager, but they have not been related to wasting money for the sake of ridding the Eagles of a player that did not fit his system.

Murray rushed for a Cowboys record 1,845 yards and a 4.7-yard average per carry in 2014 with 13 touchdowns and 2,261 total scrimmage yards (including 416 receiving yards). This season, Murray has 569 rushing yards and a 3.5-yard average with 295 additional receiving yards and five total touchdowns.

The Cowboys, meanwhile, have 1,365 yards rushing yards through 12 games this season (a 118.3-yard average) with seven touchdowns.

It's an idea that makes sense for Murray and the Cowboys, but not so much for the Eagles.
