Twenty MLS clubs began the season hoping to be crowned MLS Cup champions. Now, only the Columbus Crew or Portland Timbers will be able to live out that dream.
Crew SC entered the season as perennial favorites in the Eastern Conference. True to form, the club finished second behind the Red Bulls. Victories over Montreal and New York propelled Columbus to its first MLS Cup final since 2008.

A roller coaster campaign was righted in late September, securing the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. After surviving two posts against Sporting Kansas City, Portland outlasted the Whitecaps and FC Dallas in the playoffs.
