When Coldplay takes the stage at halftime during Super Bowl 50 they'll have some tough acts to follow. The Chris Martin-led band was given the chance to try to live up to Super Bowl halftime lore, sorry Taylor Swift and Adele fans.
Sometimes, the game between the NFC and AFC champions is a bust, but the entire spectacle is saved by the performers during the break. There have been Super Bowl years where the talent on the stage actually outshined the performers on the field.

It was revealed Thursday that Coldplay will headline the Super Bowl 50 halftime show at the 49ers' home of Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. on Feb. 7.

With Coldplay set to play this year's show, here's a look back at five of the best Super Bowl halftime performances in history.
5) Janet Jackson & Justin Timberlake (2004)
This may not have been the best performance, but it's definitely the most controversial. The controversy that stemmed from this act is the Deflategate of Super Bowl halftime shows. The debate rages on over whether or not Timberlake ripped Jackson's top off to expose her breasts intentionally, but he lived up to his vow to "have you naked by the end of this song." The issues led to FCC fines playing out in court. On the field, the Patriots toppled the Panthers, 32-29, to win the game.
4) Madonna (2012)
The Super Bowl XLIV halftime show by "Madge" was one to remember. The 12-minute blitz began with Madonna dressed as a gladiator singing "Vogue" and ended with her hit song "Like a Prayer." In between, the pop sensation was joined by LMFAO, Cee Lo Green, Nikki Minaj and M.I.A. When the party was over, it was the Giants turn to celebrate as they handed the Patriots a 21-17 defeat.
3) Beyoncé (2013)
Nothing like a Destiny's Child reunion to spice up the Super Bowl. Beyoncé hit the stage with authority and belted out such hits as "Love on Top" and "Crazy in Love," but the crowd went absolutely nuts when she reunited with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. The trio performed "Bootylicious," "Independent Women" and "Single Ladies" in front of a raucous crowd. The game itself was also a thriller (aside from a blackout) with the Ravens defeating the 49ers, 34-31.
2) U2 (2002)
With the country still reeling from the tragedy of 9/11, Bono and company used their platform to pay respects to those who were lost on that terrible day. U2 came out for the halftime show of Super Bowl XXXVI on a heart-shaped stage less than five months after the terrorist attacks and opened with "Beautiful Day." The band then jumped into "Where the Streets Have No Name," while the names of those who perished flashed on a screen in the background. Bono's jacket also had stars and stripes in its lining. On the field, the Patriots defeated the Rams 20-17.
1) Prince (2007)
Armed with the strangest looking guitar known to mankind, Prince absolutely killed it during the halftime show of Super Bowl XLI. The superstar played a lot of his greatest hits and turned Dolphin Stadium into a tizzy with his performance of "Purple Rain." After the fun, the Colts overcame the Bears 21-7.
