Approaching age 40, Tiger Woods is finally taking responsibility for his actions, even if not everything seems legitimate.
Woods sullied his reputation and shocked the world when it was discovered that he was cheating on his ex-wife, Elin Nordegren in 2009, but he said he's taken steps to repair his relationship with the mother of his two children. Though the golfer claims to have made amends with Nordegren, the picture he paints of their current relationship appears to be a bit too rosy.
David Duval's Back Issues Suggest There's No Hope For Tiger Woods
"Having the relationship that I have now with her is fantastic," Woods told Time Magazine. "She's one of my best friends. We're able to pick up the phone, and we talk to each other all the time. We both know that the most important things in our lives are our kids. I wish I would have known that back then."
While it's conceivable that Nordegren was able to forgive Woods for his transgressions for the sake of their children, "best friends" seems to be a little too happy of a term. It's hard to definitively say what the relationship between the two is like six years after their marriage hit the skids due to the golfer's infidelity, Woods seems to be stretching it.
Love Still In The Air For Lindsey Vonn, Tiger Woods
The golfer will turn 40 on Dec. 30, and it appears he finally is taking some responsibility for everything that happened. The golfer said he wished he handled the situation with his wife differently when everything first came out.
"When it comes down to it, right down to it, it's just having a more open, honest relationship with my ex-wife when we were married," he said. "Our frustrations would have come out if we had talked about it and been open and honest with each other. Which we are now, and it's absolutely fantastic."
Woods also told his two children, Sam and Charlie, that he doesn't live with their mother anymore because "Daddy made some mistakes." There were rumors that he didn't learn from those mistakes as cheating rumors cropped up after Woods' next relationship with Lindsey Vonn flamed out.
The 79-time PGA Tour winner revealed some other interesting things in the interview, including his attitude toward the media and his retirement, which seems to be all but a foregone conclusion at this point.
As for his relationship with Nordegren, Woods is hoping the media believes it's as good as the message he sent to his children.
"We're all human. We all make mistakes," Woods said he told his kids. "But look what happened at the end of it. Look at how great you are. You have two loving parents that love you no matter what."
