Stedman Bailey was suspended earlier this season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, but now has much larger problems. Bailey was shot twice on Tuesday night in Miami Gardens, Florida, and sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his head, and a wound to his hip.

The Rams have released a statement on the shooting, and indicated (via ESPN) that they’ve been able to speak with Bailey since the shooting occurred.

“We are aware Stedman Bailey was involved in an incident this evening. We have spoken with Stedman and he is in the hospital in critical, but stable, condition. We are gathering facts about the situation and will provide updates as we learn more.”

Bailey was reportedly in a car with family members, including children, and the driver of the car sustained multiple life-threatening wounds in an attempt to shield the children in the vehicle from being hit.

Bailey, 25, was St. Louis’ third-round pick out of West Virginia in 2013. He’s had a quiet career thus far, compiling 59 catches, 843 yards and two touchdowns in 38 games (eight starts). His four-game suspension was set to expire on Dec. 14, and Bailey accepted the punishment for violating the league’s policy without an appeal.
