Canelo Alvarez put on an impressive display to hack out a unanimous decision win over Miguel Cotto in their bout held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas to become the new linear middleweight title-holder.

The fight wasn’t exactly the exchange that most boxing fans were looking for, but it did offer everyone key moments. Cotto played it conservatively, looking for great shots on his Mexican foe.

But in the end, it was Alvarez’ aggressiveness that stood out and earned him the unanimous vote as the winner.

With that out of the way, another looming mega bout is waiting on the horizon. The WBC had already made it clear that Gennady Golovkin is the next fighter for the winner of the Alvarez vs. Cotto match and the Mexican pug is welcoming the challenge.

"I'll put the gloves on right now and fight him," Canelo said via the Bleacer Report. "I respect he's a great champion. I know him. He's a friend of mine. But right now I'll put the gloves on against him."

For the record, Golovkin did pick Alvarez to win over Cotto and he did admit at the time that the Mexican is not an easy opponent to deal with as reported by ESPN Sports Nation.

Golovkin was at ringside during the match and was seemingly sporting a grin since he knew that a fight with the Mexican is likely next and will likely be set sometime in 2016.

“I’m ready for this, me and Canelo,” he said via Yahoo Sports. “Let’s do it.”
