The WWE has a major problem when it comes to star power.
The company has done a great job through NXT and other means of replenishing its midcard talent. Guys like Dean Ambrose, Dolph Ziggler, Roman Reigns, Bray Wyatt, Cesaro and others have bright futures in the WWE, but so far, none of them have stood out as possibly being the next Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Steve Austin or John Cena. This is mostly due to the WWE not giving them a chance.
The WWE has become way too reliant on older stars and while it seemed like things would change when Seth Rollins was crowned World Heavyweight Champion, they didn't.
Rollins was booked terribly while carrying the richest prize in the game and for his last two feuds, the WWE once again went to the well of older stars. "The Architect" first battled Sting, who showed his age (55) by getting injured in the match, and then moved on to a laughable feud with the split personalities of Kane.
John Cena Heel Turn Necessary For Undertaker Feud
To be fair, the WWE was planning on a Rollins vs. Reign clash at Survivor Series, but it was set to play second-fiddle to another older star in The Undertaker. Yes, "The Deadman's" 25th anniversary with the company is historic and should be recognized, but it's also just another example of the WWE going back to the well of former stars rather than building up new ones.
Look no further than WrestleMania for proof of this. Harkening back to 2011, the WWE used The Rock as guest host to sell WrestleMania XXVII. "The Brahma Bull" then main evented two straight WrestleManias, which was part of what CM Punk complained about when he decided he had enough and walked out on the company.
This past March at WrestleMania, the WWE buried Wyatt by having him fall to The Undertaker, while the two main events featured stars who first rose to fame in the 1990s and early 2000s as Brock Lesnar was in the final match and Sting took on Triple H in the other main event.
Wrestler | Age |
Big Show | 43 |
The Rock | 43 |
Chris Jericho | 45 |
Triple H | 46 |
Kane | 48 |
Goldberg | 48 |
Steve Austin | 50 |
The Undertaker | 50 |
Sting | 56 |
Another aging star that has been rumored to make a comeback is Bill Goldberg, though he seems pretty bitter at the WWE and said he had a "crappy time" last time with the company. Despite this, he would be interested in possibly facing Austin, another rumored aging star, if he ever did return to the squared circle.
"I've been asked the question a thousand times," Goldberg told TMZ. "...The reality is, if there was another match, who would you want it with? It would be Steve."
The WWE could go with the dream match eventually, but for now it needs to focus on its future.
With a tournament to crown a new WWE Champion starting on RAW this week and ending at Survivor Series, the time to find a rising star is now.
