Robert Griffin III was once the second overall pick of the NFL Draft, and someone the Redskins saw fit to trade three first round picks for. Now, the NFL trade deadline has come and gone, and Griffin hasn’t played a single snap this year. More telling, no teams called the Redskins about his availability.
This doesn’t necessarily mean the entire league has given up entirely on Griffin being a useful player. The Redskins picked up a $16 million option for 2016 on him this offseason, which is guaranteed for injury. That means QB-needy teams like the 49ers, Jets and Cowboys would be stuck with him if he suffers a major injury, which is not unlikely. It does, however, mean that teams are down enough on him that they won’t take the risk.
Fans Wanted McCoy, Not RGIII, To Replace Struggling Kirk Cousins
Griffin once won the Rookie of the Year award (2012), and threw 20 touchdowns against five picks, while rushing for 815 yards and seven touchdowns.

At this point, the option that the Redskins picked up might be a worse decision than the massive haul of draft picks (eight in total) that they gave the Rams for the No. 2 spot. And the blame for that would land directly on owner Daniel Snyder, according to an ESPN report from August. Which means there’s absolutely nothing anyone can do about the person responsible for the decision.
Can Kevin Durant Save His Hometown 'Skins?
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Dianna Russini, Snyder wouldn’t let the ‘Skins move on even though it was clear the coaching staff preferred Kirk Cousins, and likely Colt McCoy.
“But it is becoming increasingly apparent that Griffin has lost his starting quarterback job and, depending on the events and conversations in the coming days, possibly his roster spot. Outside of ownership, there has been a groundswell of support from a strong segment of football people within the organization to change quarterbacks, but there is a question about whether they have the authority to move on from Griffin.”
Now, the Redskins will almost certainly get nothing for RGIII after the season, when they probably will cut him. It’s been a startling fall for a player once considered Andrew Luck’s equal, but the Redskins’ mismanagement of his entire career has been even more stunning.
