NBA hall-of-famer John Stockton makes his collegiate coaching debut as an assistant with the Montana State Bobcats women's basketball team on Wednesday.

Stockton, it was announced last week, joined the team as an assistant to head coach Tricia Binford. Stockton had previously coached his daughter Lindsay and fellow MSU teammates Hannah Caudil at Gonzaga prep. He also helped coach sophomore guard Delany Junkermier and sophomore Lexi Dawkins.

Stockton said he was approached by Binford earlier this year and he accepted the position without any hesitation.

"Coach Binford called and took a flier asking if I'd be interested," Stockton said. "I'm excited about the prospect of working with the kids. I've enjoyed watching the team over the past three years. I had a chance to be around them and develop relationships during their trip to the Bahamas this spring. It will be a fun group to work with."

Binford said she can't wait to have the expertise of the all-time NBA assists leader coaching next to her when the season officially kicks off this week.

"With the timing right before the start of the season, we were looking for someone that would offer us the smoothest transition, and John is someone who has been consistently around our program that we respect and trust," Binford said. "He's coached four of our current players; he's always working in a gym; and given his commitment to family and business, we're very appreciative that he's agreed to become a part of our program."

Lindsey Stockton is a junior with the Bobcats heading into the 2015-2016 season. Last year she finished the season averaging 5.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game.

The MSU Bobcats play in the Big Sky Conference and are located in Bozeman, Montana.

Stockton went into more about why he took the job in this recent interview he did on the Dan Patrick Show.
