Four-time world champion Juan Manuel Marquez says weight issues cost Saul "Canelo" Alvarez his fight against undisputed pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, Jr. who handily beat the 23-year old last week at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

"The weight hurt," Marquez was quoted by Boxing Scene as saying. The Mexican continued his assessment of the match by saying that Alvarez "had to make an effort (to make the weight). They say he took off 15 pounds in a few weeks to make the 152-pounds."

Both Alvarez and Mayweather agreed to the fight with a 152-pound catchweight. While Alvarez did make the weight, he reportedly gained 10 pounds overnight. The size advantage was very apparent but did not work to Alvarez's advantage as he struggled to keep up with the smaller Mayweather's quickness.

Aside from having no answer for the hand speed of the American, Alvarez also was ineffective in pressuring the pound-for-pound king. Mayweather simply eluded Alvarez and dodged his haymakers the entire night.

Marquez also pointed out that Alvarez had no game plan against the superior Mayweather. He told Boxing Scene that he thought Alvarez had no corner, no game plan and simply didn't apply enough pressure against Mayweather.

Marquez also praised Mayweather for his dominant win, the 45th consecutive victory in the his legendary career. Marquez said Mayweather's win was undeniable and that the latter proved that he is invincible and the best fighter in the planet.

Marquez is among those who have tasted defeat in the hands of Mayweather. The two clashed in a welterweight fight dubbed "Numero Uno/Number 1." Mayweather won a unanimous decision.
