In a July article by Badlefthook.com, top middleweight Sergio Martinez proclaimed that he wanted to face the winner of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Canelo Alvarez bout.
Mayweather defeated Alvarez in a rout, and in the wake of his domination has to search high and far for a challenge. Some believe the only thing left for Floyd to do is move to middleweight and battle Martinez. In that July article Sergio was clear in his desire to face off against "Money."
"Today Mayweather is the best. But if Canelo wins, he will be the best. I want either one of them, I do not care who wins. ... I'm not thinking about retirement. I'm signed for two more fights with [HBO], after that I will sit down and consider whether I plan hang up the gloves," Martinez said at the time.
While a matchup of Mayweather vs. Martinez could be scintillating, there are major roadblocks that will almost definitely derail the bout. First, both Martinez and Mayweather are at advanced ages, and Martinez is still locked in for two more fights on HBO, while Floyd has four fights remaining on a Showtime contract.
Second, Martinez was badly injured in his most recent fight against Martin Murray, in which his victory was debatable at best.
Instead, it is more likely Mayweather will choose someone from a pool of Danny Garcia, Amir Khan and Devon Alexander. Garcia is an undefeated and undisputed champion at 140 lbs., and defeated knockout artist Lucas Matthysse soundly after opening up Matthysse's right eye midway through the fight.
Khan and Alexander are facing one another in December, but Mayweather's team is likely hoping for a Khan victory. Khan poses a different threat than the heavy, power-punchers recently thrown in the ring for Mayweather to run circles around.
Khan is all hand-speed and combinations; he also has a suspect chin, offering Floyd the opportunity for a rare knockout.
