The Texans have released quarterback Ryan Mallett after missing a team flight ahead of Sunday's blowout loss in Miami.
The Houston Chronicle reported Monday that coach Bill O'Brien was upset about Saturday's incident and initially wanted to release Mallett right away, but a consensus was reached that the team should wait, rather than go into a game with only one active quarterback.
Mallett was late for the meeting and missed the team's charter flight to Miami on Saturday and blamed his tardiness on traffic. He then flew commercial to join his teammates for Sunday's game. This is not the first issue with timing regarding Mallett this season, as Mallet reportedly 'overslept' and missed a practice in training camp the same week Brian Hoyer was named the starting quarterback.
Ryan Mallett, Not Bill O'Brien, May Finish Year On NFL Team
Mallett was in his second season when the Texans acquired the former Patriot for practically nothing in a trade last season. He started two games in 2014 before tearing his pectoral muscle. Mallett was beat out by Hoyer for the starting job this preseason, but took over for Hoyer late in the team's ugly Week 1 loss to Kansas City.
Ryan Mallett just doesn't care enough to be an NFL quarterback. Some players will bust their asses to be in the NFL. He's not one of them.

WR Sammy Watkins Blasts Critics On Social Media Who Say He's Fragile
In addition to his irresponsibility, Mallett struggled this season with 770 yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions.
According to ESPN, the team signed quarterback T.J. Yates, who was a free agent, to replace Mallet.
Mallett is suddenly a free agent. It will be interesting to see if any other team gives him a shot after this episode in Houston. A third-round pick by the Patriots in 2011, Mallett might have to wait until the offseason to get work again.
Despite Mallett's shortcomings, it seems likely that a team will take a chance on him due to his impressive physical abilities.
