The Browns' game plans for Sunday's matchup against the Cardinals could be on hold because of Johnny Manziel.

They wouldn't be if their backup was another former Heisman Trophy winner: Tim Tebow.

Inability To Cope With Backup Role Led To Johnny Manziel's Incident With Girlfriend

The NFL is investigating Manziel's domestic incident with girlfriend Colleen Crowley that took place Oct. 12 and whether Manziel violated the league's personal conduct policy, Cleveland.com reported.

The Browns are awaiting a meeting between Manziel and NFL officials. He could be the starter against Arizona, as starter Josh McCown skipped practice Wednesday to rest shoulder and rib injuries suffered during Cleveland's loss last weekend to the Rams.

Argument With Drunken Girlfriend May Cost Johnny Manziel His Job

"Pettine said he's not sure yet if Manziel will be available for Sunday's game against the Cardinals," Cleveland.com reported. "Currently, he's still expected to be the backup behind Josh McCown as long as McCown's shoulder injury continues to improve.

"We're just (at a) 'wait and see,''' Pettine said, per the report. "The league has its protocol on how they handle these situations and we've been ultra cooperative to date and will continue to be."

Manziel, a former first-round draft choice, has been more of an embarrassment to the Browns than he has been a contributor. He has played decently when replacing an ailing McCown, but the incident with Crowley is troubling -- even if Crowley's claims that Manziel hit her a couple of times and shoved her head against the car window are unfounded.

Manziel admitted to having been drinking on a Monday afternoon, just months after he completed a session at a rehab facility.

The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner has a career 73.6 passer rating in eight career games and a 1-2 record as a starter.

Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, has a career 75.4 passer rating in 35 career games, an 8-6 regular-season record as a starter and a 1-1 record in the playoffs.

The only thing that may be keeping Manziel on the roster is the fact that the team spent a first-round pick on him and don't want to admit failure. But can he be that much better than Tebow, who would've made the Eagles roster if Chip Kelly had decided to go with three quarterbacks?
