The development of Ryan Tannehill has demonstrated the pros and cons of using patience with a young quarterback.
The Dolphins quarterback had a "turning-point" game in Miami's 44-26 victory over the Texans in which he set an NFL record with 25 straight completions -- the last seven from the team's win over the Titans and the first 18 against Houston on Sunday -- This Given Sunday reported.
Ryan Tannehill Says Dolphins Have Snitch On Team
"Since being selected eighth overall out of Texas A&M in 2012, Tannehill is the only quarterback to start for Miami and probably the best the Dolphins have had since the legendary Dan Marino called it quits after the 1999 season," This Given Sunday added.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Tannehill was being criticized for his treatment of the Dolphins' practice squad, and coach Joe Philbin lost his job after the Dolphins lost three of their first four games.
Tom Brady's Treatment Of Practice Squad Puts Ryan Tannehill To Shame
He admits to telling a practice squad member to "Enjoy your practice squad paycheck," after being intercepted in practice.
Tannehill has led the Dolphins to a 26-28 record, but he slowly and steadily has become a better NFL quarterback. He finished the game against the Texans completing 18-of-19 passes for 282 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He would've set the NFL record for completion percentage in a game, but he needed one more pass to qualify (and one more completion).
"After a record-setting performance on Sunday, there's renewed hope that Tannehill can eventually bring the franchise something it hasn't had in over four decades. That's a world championship," This Given Sunday reported.
Prior to last week's game against the Titans, Tannehill had played for only one NFL coach in Philbin, who came for the 2012 season -- the same season the Texas A&M product entered the league.
Philbin, was replaced by Dan Campbell, who now is being hailed as a genius for pushing the right buttons for getting Miami going.
The Dolphins scored a franchise-record 41 points in the first half against the Texans, revealing more of the potential the team saw in Tannehill when it drafted him eighth overall.
Two games do not make a turnaround, but Tannehill suddenly looks like a potential franchise quarterback again. That's quite a turnaround from the turmoil surrounding him a couple of weeks ago.
