Every year, more and more people die from leukemia, dengue or loss of blood. To combat these diseases, millions of major operations are performed worldwide, which most of the 234 million operations are done involving blood transfusions or treatments resulting in a continuous need for blood donations. Recently, Abbott teamed up with Soccer superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo in releasing a movement of donating blood.
As a regular donor, Ronaldo understood the importance of blood donation, especially to people who are in need of blood transfusion. When his teammate's son became ill, he donated blood -which was his first time to donate blood. Ever since, Ronaldo has continued to donate regularly, and made sure that no activity will prevent him from donating.
"We can all make a difference by donating blood. Each donation can benefit up to three people in emergency situations and for long-term medical treatments," said Ronaldo. "That's why I am enthusiastic to be partnering with Abbott to bring awareness to the importance of blood donation and to encourage people around the world to become lifelong blood donors and help save lives."
Abbott and Real Madrid came up with a partnership that would bring greater attention to this important cause. The Real Madrid and Portugal forward will be the face of an international multi-platform Abbott, encouraging young people to give blood regularly. Ronaldo, 30, will serve as the first global ambassador for the 'Be The 1 movement' - developed to inspire young people around the world to regularly donate blood and spread its awareness, #BeThe1Donor.
