Hawks guard Thabo Sefolosha, who had his leg broken during an altercation with the NYPD during the 2015 NBA playoffs, was reportedly preparing to sue the NYPD for $50 million. That report from The New York Post isn’t being refuted by Sefolosha’s lawyer, but there is a possibility that Sefolosha lets the incident slide.

Sefolosha’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, has already filed a notice of claim, which the Post reported, that paves the way for a lawsuit to happen. As of now, that’s all the paperwork means according to the attorney. The lawsuit is for up to $50 million and claims “permanent” injuries, even though Sefolosha was back on the court and dunking this preseason.

Sefolosha Claims He Was Giving Money To A Homeless Man Before Cops Beat Him

Sefolosha was out with teammate Pero Antic at 1OAK in Manhattan when the incident occurred. The police said action was necessary because Sefolosha wouldn’t cooperate, and he was charged with resisting arrest. Earlier this month, Sefolosha was cleared of that, and witnesses say he was simply giving some money to a homeless man.

Sefolosha says one of the cops, JohnPaul Giacona told him “With or without a badge, I’m going to f— you up and I can f—you up.” Sefolosha’s leg was broken when it was hit with one of the officers’ billy club.

Now, it’s just a matter of following through with the lawsuit, or dropping the matter and focusing entirely on Atlanta’s upcoming season.

"To reserve the rights of Mr. Sefolosha, filing the notice of claim was a necessary step," Spiro said ... "At this time, no final decision has been reached."
