Former NFL running back Clinton Portis has created a minor stir in Washington by openly discussing a divide between players when he played for the Redskins under Jim Zorn. According to Portis, the locker room was divided between “Christians and ballplayers.”

Portis named wide receiver Antwaan Randle El as one of the more preachy players, and described lectures from those factions at times.

"I'm grown," Portis said. "I can do what I want to do. I don't have a police record. If I don't get in no trouble, don't assume the way that I live my life, don't preach to me about what's right. Because you're not right, you're phony, you're sitting here in my face telling me one thing and then you go behind my back and say something else."

Openly faithful players are still divisive in today’s landscape. Here are some of the most well-known, and often mocked, religious athletes.
