For nearly two decades, the Hell in a Cell match has led to some of the most incredible moments and unforgettable matches in WWE history.

5 Possible Hell In A Cell Opponents For John Cena

Starting with the inaugural match between The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels in 1997, the stipulation has spawned into its own event every October.

With Hell in a Cell emanating live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles this Sunday, here's a look at the top five clashes in the event's history. If you're new to the stipulation or just want to relive some great history, these are muse-sees on the WWE Network.

Honorable Mentions: Undertaker vs. Mankind (King of the Ring 1998) and Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar (No Mercy 2003)

5) The Undertaker vs. Edge (SummerSlam 2008)

"The Deadman" and "Rated 'R' Superstar" had a historic feud on the SmackDown brand, and it reached its apex inside the unforgiving structure. The match was insane, with Edge taking a beating, but also utilizing his famed tables, ladders and chairs to strike his demonic opponent. After chokeslamming Edge through a stack of tables, The Undertaker pinned him to put him out of his misery.

4) Six-Man Hell in a Cell (Armageddon 2000)

For the first time ever, six Superstars competed in a cell match for the richest prize in the game as Kurt Angle put his WWE Championship on the line against such big names as "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, The Rock, The Undertaker, Triple H and Rikishi. The bout was a brutal war and the most memorable spot saw The Undertaker chokeslam Rikishi from the top of the cell into a flatbed truck. In the end, Angle snuck a pinfall on The Rock after Austin delivered a Stone Cold Stunner to him.

3) The Undertaker vs. Triple H (WrestleMania XXVIII)

The "End of an Era" was bolstered by the punch of two legends going at it one last time with Shawn Michaels as the special guest referee. This was a dramatic back-and-forth affair inside the cell with near fall-after-near fall throughout it. The back-and-forth, pulse-pounding contest came to an end when The Undertaker retained his streak by hitting the Tombstone on "The Game."

2) Cactus Jack vs. Triple H (No Way Out 2000)

This was a legendary blood bath between two icons as Mick Foley put his career on the line in a last chance match against Triple H, who was defending the WWE Championship. One of the memorable spots saw "The Game" back body drop the Hardcore Legend through the cell roof and through the mat below. Triple H then hit the Pedigree on him to win the match and retain the gold. Foley's retirement didn't stick as he was back to main event WrestleMania a month later, but still the match was excellent.

1) Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker (Badd Blood 1997)

Two of the biggest legends went head-to-head when "The Heartbreak Kid" and "The Demon from Death Valley" clashed in the inaugural Hell in a Cell match. The bout was legendary, with Michaels taking a man-sized bump through the announce table, but it was also historic aside from being the first. Kane made his debut and attacked The Undertaker, helping Michaels win the match and by proxy become the No. 1 contender for Bret Hart's title. The match went down at Survivor Series 1997, leading to the infamous Montreal Screwjob.
