John Cena will defend the United States Championship in an open challenge at Hell in a Cell this Sunday, adding some intrigue to the proceedings.
Shield RAW Reunion Latest Sign Of Seth Rollins' Face Turn
The "Cenation" leader's open challenges have been a great part of RAW, but with the 15-time World Heavyweight Champion expected to take some time off, this may be his last for a while. It is likely that Cena will drop the belt at the Staples Center in Los Angeles this Sunday.
Here are five Superstars who could possibly answer the call.
1) Dolph Ziggler
"The Showoff" is in six-man action on the pre-show, but it wouldn't be unprecedented for a Superstar to wrestle twice. Ziggler has been floundering for a while, but now that his lame feud with Rusev is about to end, he could be free for a very interesting arc. The WWE seemed to hint at a feud between Ziggler and Cena, and it could be sparked this Sunday.
Not only should Ziggler answer the challenge and win, but he should also beat down the "Cenation" leader after the bout to turn heel. He would then make a torrid run through the midcard as champion until Cena returns in December to continue the feud.
2) Dean Ambrose
"The Lunatic Fringe" has nothing to do now that his partner Randy Orton got injured, causing the WWE to cancel the planned tag team match that would have pit the babyfaces against Luke Harper and Braun Strowman. The WWE has booked Ambrose weaker than his two former Shield stablemates since the split, but a lengthy match with Cena and another run with the United States Championship could do wonders for him.
3) Daniel Bryan
This could be a long shot, but "The Beard" has said he's been cleared to wrestle for months and is just waiting on WWE doctors to give him the go-ahead to get back into the ring. The WWE may be hesitant to thrust him back into the squared circle due to injury risk, but he still remains a strong possibility. After his Intercontinental Championship reign was cut short, he can make up for it with a nice United States Championship reign.
4) Kevin Owens
The former NXT Champion is due to defend the Intercontinental Championship against Ryback, so he could also be a wild-card. If Owens loses in his defense to "The Big Guy," he could rekindle his rivalry with Cena later in the show. It's plausible that Owens could walk into the Staples Center with one midcard title and leave with a completely different one.
5) Tyler Breeze
The NXT Superstar is slated to make his main roster debut, and the WWE could thrust him onto the big stage by having him take on the face of the franchise. After all, Cena had a memorable clash with NXT sensation Sami Zayn back in May. Though it would be hard to see Breeze toppling Cena in his first pay-per-view match, Owens did so against him in his first WWE main roster bout. Breeze or any other NXT star can never be counted out.
