Daniel Murphy is killing it for the Mets this postseason, but he'll likely be playing elsewhere in 2016.
Murphy set a Mets franchise record by hitting a home run in four straight playoff games and notching five round-trippers in a single postseason. Adding to the unbelievable feat, New York's second baseman has hit homers off of Cy Young candidates Clayton Kershaw (twice), Zack Greinke and Jake Arrieta, and he also went deep off of two-time World Series champion Jon Lester.
Even The MLB's Best Can't Get Daniel Murphy Out
The Mets have made it abundantly clear that Murphy won't be back, as the less expensive trio of Wilmer Flores, Matt Reynolds and Dilson Herrera will help comprise the middle infield in 2016. Murphy may be thinking of a possible World Series and not his impending free agency, but his performance is going to help him get paid this offseason.
But who will be opening their wallets for the strong-hitting second baseman? Here are three possibilities.
MMA Fighter CM Punk Taunts Mets Fans
1) Yankees
Murphy is already showing what he can do in the biggest spotlight in New York, and he hasn't disappointed. What was disappointing was the Yankees' output from their second baseman in 2015. Though Rob Refsnyder appears to be the club's primary second baseman heading into next season, it's worth noting that Yankee hitters combined for a .219 batting average from that position, which includes Stephen Drew's ugly .201 mark. Murphy, like Refsnyder, isn't known for his fielding, but he could make a mockery out of that short porch at Yankee Stadium.
2) Dodgers
With Howie Kendrick set to become an unrestricted free agent and Chase Utley getting older, the Dodgers could opt to sign the man who just haunted them in the NLDS. Los Angeles saw first-hand what Murphy could do and has never been shy about throwing money at anyone. Murphy hit .333/.333/.810 in the five-game NLDS against the Dodgers, hitting three homers -- including the decisive blow off Greinke in Game 5 -- and notching five RBI.
3) Angels
Los Angeles had another very disappointing season, failing to make the playoffs despite having a resurgent year from Albert Pujols and being armed with arguably the game's best player in Mike Trout. The Angels could sign Murphy to bolster their lineup, which finished 27th in the majors with a .246 team batting average this season.
