The Miami Dolphins spent $60 million to sign free agent wide receiver Mike Wallace and give second-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill the weapon he needs to become a franchise player.
The Dolphins got a 23-10 win over the Cleveland Browns Sunday afternoon, but Wallace only registered one catch for 15 yards in that victory. Following the game, Wallace was upset and could be seen talking to the Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland.
Wallace is taking heat for worrying about his own stat line and being upset after his team won; he's also being called selfish. In the locker room Wallace was asked several questions about getting only one catch, as well as limited targets. His only response was to angrily say "Ask coach." . Wallace, however, is now saying he was simply upset at himself for not playing up to his potential.
"I'm mad at myself just because I didn't have a good game. That's all," Wallace said. "I was upset with myself. It wasn't really anything else to do with anything. I would've told you the same thing regardless. If you ask me about the plays, I don't really have the answer. That's all I meant by that."
Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman backed his player, and defended the comments as frustration with a rough afternoon.
"Mike's a competitor. He wants to feel a part of the game, as I hope that he would. He came here to be a factor in our season and our success. The fact that he's disappointed he only caught one ball, that's expected. I have no problem with that."
Finally, Wallace said he values a team victory over his own performance. I'm always happy to win. That's what we play for, to win," Wallace said. "I expect to win. So I don't get overly excited when we win, because every time we step on the field, that's what I'm there for. If you see us win or you see us lose, I'm not going to be jumping around either way."
