The WWE will be without its face of the franchise for the foreseeable future after Hell in a Cell, but there is a lot of mystery surrounding John Cena taking time off.

It has been reported that the reigning United States Champion plans to take a sabbatical from the company following the big event on Oct. 25 in Los Angeles, and he won't return to the ring until after Christmas.

5 Superstars Who Could Step Up In Cena's Absence

Cena is known as a gamer who rarely takes time away from the ring, but what makes it even more interesting is the layer of secrecy surrounding his decision. The "Cenation" leader requested the time off in the summer and his decision to take a hiatus has been a hot topic backstage in the WWE lately, according to PWInsider.

Per the site, the 15-time World Heavyweight Champion is being very guarded about why he's taking time off, but has apparently told some co-workers that they'll see it was a good thing he did when they find out why.

How Does Nikki Bella's Ex Dolph Ziggler Stack Up Against John Cena?

With his leave of absence shrouded in mystery, here are three potential reasons for Cena's break:

1) Nikki Bella Is Wearing Him Out

If you take one look at the longest reigning WWE Divas Champion in history, it's easy to be envious of Cena for being an extremely lucky man. Still, to land and keep a girl with the looks and assets of Bella, one has to be plenty busy in the bedroom and keep her happy in all other aspects of the relationship. Apparently Cena doesn't intend to take time off to marry Bella, but maybe an engagement and celebration are in the works? Or perhaps, Bella is too much to handle in the sack.

2) Injury

There is a lot of speculation that Cena may be nursing an injury, but he has insisted to the contrary. Still, wrestling night-in and night-out as the main man in the WWE has to put some wear and tear on the Superstar's hulking figure. Cena has taken his lumps and put a lot of impact into his body for years in the WWE and at age 38, it could be catching up to him.

3) Midcard Malaise

Maybe the face of the franchise is tired of playing second-fiddle in the midcard. It could be a long shot since Cena seems to be rejuvenated and has had amazing matches during his U.S. Open Challenges, but perhaps he's ready to take some time off so that he can refocus on being the top dog in the company. With Seth Rollins having an up-and-down run as champion, perhaps Cena is ready to drop his United States Championship in order to unseat Rollins, as well as tie Ric Flair with his record 16th reign with the World Title.
