A possible Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao rematch was mentioned Thursday, but it didn’t take long for Top Rank promoter Bob Arum to quickly shoot down those rumors.
To rewind a bit, a report from Yahoo Sports by way of Agence France Presse somehow surprised many when it was mentioned that there were ongoing talks between the camps of Pacquiao and Mayweather for a possible rematch in 2016.
Retirement Is Imminent For Manny Pacquiao
All of a sudden, Mayweather’s name has been dragged in the circle of possible opponents which had earlier included only Amir Khan and Lucas Matthysse.
Matthysse was erased from the list after bowing to Viktor Postol last Saturday. Hence, Khan was left the sole possible opponent until the name of the retired American boxer suddenly surfaced.

After a couple of hours though, Arum spoke on the matter and was pretty much as surprised.
"I have no idea what he's talking about," says Arum via Yahoo Sports. "He said it, not me. But I have had no talks with anyone about that. None. Zero. Not one. Mayweather is retired and I take him at his word. But second, you know there is no way that Mayweather is ever going to fight in the Gulf, even if he did decide to fight again."
The Top Rank promoter believes that the erroneous report came about due to language barriers. He believes that Pacquiao may have said something that got lost in translation and that one side didn’t fully understand what was said.
Aside from Khan, there are still other names in the list of possible opponents. That includes Juan Manuel Marquez, Timothy Bradley Jr. and Terence Crawford.
Marquez’ case will depend on whether he is still active or not while Bradley and Crawford’s case would depend on how their upcoming fights turn out.
Whoever it is should be known in the coming months. The only thing sure now is that it definitely will not be Mayweather who announced his retirement after his fight last September 12 against Andre Berto.
