Super Bowl Halftime: Bruno Mars Announced As Performer For The NFL's Biggest Stage [VIDEO]

While teams battle in the NFL in Week 1 with aspirations of reaching the Super Bowl this winter, one thing is certain: Bruno Mars will be the half time performer in New Jersey for the NFL's biggest game of the year.

The Associated Press reported Saturday that the NFL is planning on making the announcement that Mars, a Grammy winner, will perform during the Super Bowl halftime show Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. An official announcement of the plans is expected to be made at an event in Times Square Sunday in New York.

The 2013-14 NFL season kicked off Thursday with the Denver Bronco's victory over the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens, and will continue with a full schedule of games Sunday as every team strives for an appearance in one of the biggest sporting events of the year come February.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Super Bowl halftimes have averaged over 100 million viewers on T.V. in the United States alone the past few years.

Mars joins a long list of popular singers that have performed at the break in the action. Last year, Beyonce performed in New Orleans as Baltimore went on to top the San Francisco 49ers 34-31. Madonna performed at the show in 2012, the Black Eyed Peas along with Usher and Slash appeared at the 2011 installment, The Who played in 2010 and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band took the stage in 2009.

Mars has gained a lot of fanfare and popularity, propelling him into the spotlight for the halftime show. Mars, 27, has several No. 1 hits including his latest "When I Was Your Man."

Mars, who was born Peter Hernandez, is known for songs such as "Locked out of Heaven," "Grenade," and "Just the Way You Are."
