Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (33-0, 30 KO) is preparing for the biggest fight of his career on Oct. 17, a unification fight pitting his WBA and IBO titles against fellow knockout artist David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KO), the IBF champion. Lemieux, on paper, poses the greatest threat of Golovkin’s career, but Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez finds it hard to envision this bout going the distance.

“I’m confident it’s not going to go 12, and it’s not going to go very many rounds because he’s going to go down as one of the best middleweights, and one of the biggest punchers ever,” Sanchez said.

Lemieux, who has one more knockout than Golovkin does, has stopped seven of his last nine opponents. In his last fight, vs. Hassan N’Dam for the then-vacant IBF title, he dropped N’Dam six times en route to a unanimous decision victory. Sanchez said that this training camp for Golovkin has been different in that Golovkin feels he is finally facing an opponent who poses real danger.

“Finally he gets someone he considers a threat. Someone he feels is gonna give him a fight not just for a couple of rounds, but for as long as it lasts,” Sanchez said. Sanchez is also eager to see how Golovkin reacts to being hurt by a big puncher.

“All the great fighters at one time or another were hurt, were dropped. My question is if that happens to us, how is he going to react? How are we going to react in the corner for never seeing that?”
