Even before a loss to the Jets across the pond dropped the Dolphins to 1-3 and cost his head coach his job, Ryan Tannehill was finding new ways to take out his frustration -- verbally abusing the practice squad.
After winning its season-opener, 17-10, over lowly Washington, Miami dropped two straight games and hoped that flying into London would help turn around its fortunes. It did not. The Dolphins were handed a 27-14 loss by the rival Jets on Sunday at Wembley Stadium, leading to the team dismissing Joe Philbin from his head coaching post.
3 Potential Replacements For Joe Philbin
The frustration is palpable, and Tannehill isn't very good at hiding it. Even before getting beaten up by the Jets, the signal caller was at his wits end, yelling at the practice squad Saturday on the eve of the big game after it forced a couple of turnovers against him.
"Enjoy your practice squad paycheck, enjoy your practice squad trophy," Tannehill was heard barking at the players, according to NFPost.com.
Apparently, this has been going on for a while and Saturday was just the breaking point for the young quarterback.
The practice squad players have been shaking Tannehill's confidence by picking him off regularly during practices thus far this season. NFPost.com reports that the situation escalated so much that Philbin had told the players to go easy on Tannehill, but obviously his frustration boiled over and Philbin's voice is no longer a part of the team.
It's been n infuriating start for Tannehill, who signed a six-year $95 million contract extension with the Dolphins this offseason. Miami's offense ranks 30th in the league with 65 total points this season and 25th with 314.8 yards per game.
The Dolphins are dead last in the AFC East at the quarter mark of the season, and haven't made the playoffs since 2008, the last time they launched a winning campaign. If Tannehill can't perform against a practice squad that was told to tone it down, it doesn't bode well for Miami against opposing defenses.
Tight ends coach Dan Campbell has inherited a dumpster fire from Philbin.
