Florida Gators News Update: Players Suspended For Season Opener, Two Failed Drug Tests [VIDEO]

University of Florida star cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy is one of six Gators' players suspended for the team's season opener due to disciplinary reasons, according to the Palm Beach Post.

The newspaper reported late Friday that Purifoy and backup wide receiver Latroy Pittman are being disciplined over failed drug tests, while backups Darious Cummings, Jay-nard Bostwick and Quinteze Williams will join them on the sidelines for unspecified reasons. It was announced in early July that starting middle linebacker Antonio Morrison would be benched for the game after he was twice arrested during the summer.

No. 10 Florida plays Toledo in their season opener on Saturday. According to The Post, Florida coach Will Muschamp again confirmed that Morrison would be held out of the game earlier this week, but the school never officially confirmed the other suspensions.

A junior, Purifoy is considered one of the top cornerbacks in the nation and was also slated to be part of the Gators plan on offense and special teams. The Post reports, throughout the summer, there had been indications he had perhaps fallen into Muschamp's doghouse, as on the team's depth chart he was listed as sharing his starting cornerback spot with senior Jaylen Watkins.

In addition to be considered one of the game's best cover men, Purifoy has 50 career tackles and 23 assists.

In the wake of the scandal involving former Florida star Aaron Hernandez, Gator officials have been desperately seeking to clean up the program's somewhat tarnished image. Hernandez, a former New England Patriots tight end, is currently jailed on first degree murder charges.
