He wasn't Dan Marino or Terry Bradshaw during his 2015 debut, but Colin Kaepernick did show signs of becoming a more complete quarterback.

San Francisco coach Jim Tomsula attempted to give his quarterback a compliment during a teleconference call with Pittsburgh media on Wednesday, ESPN reported.

Colin Kaepernick Could Be Headed Down Same Path As RGIII

"I don't think we had something that was broke," Tomsula said. "He's a very talented athlete. He's a very talented quarterback. We always want to compare -- this guy's Danny Marino, this guy's Terry Bradshaw -- Colin Kaepernick is just Colin Kaepernick.

"He's got a skill set, we just want to utilize his skill set."

Kaepernick competed 17-of-26 passes for 165 yards and rushed for 41 during the 49ers' Week 1 win Monday night over the Vikings. While he didn't have eye-popping stats and while the 49ers didn't exactly light up the scoreboard, Kap did show that he took what he learned in the offseason from Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner to heart, Yahoo Sports reported.

"... There were reasons to be excited about Kaepernick's growth as a quarterback," Yahoo Sports noted. "He displayed more poise, avoiding an oncoming defense, then pump-faking to fool defenders before finding an open receiver.

"He also showed a willingness to hang in the pocket, then feather a pass to Vernon Davis as the pocket collapsed, whereas previously, he might have taken off running or threw an uncatchable bullet."

The knock on Kaepernick last season was that he couldn't deliver the football with touch, that he had little pocket presence and that he took off running too soon with the football. He made strides in all three departments Monday night.

If comparisons were to be made, instead of Marino and Bradshaw, Kaepernick might've been more like Roger Staubach or Fran Tarkenton.

If he keeps on progressing, it'll be harder for Tomsula to say Colin Kaepernick is just Colin Kaepernick.
