Miguel Cabrera won the 2012 American League MVP award by a landslide after winning the coveted Triple Crown chase, meaning he led the league in batting average, home runs and RBI.
This season, the Tigers slugger is performing at an even higher level than he did in 2012, but the Triple Crown's looking to be in doubt. That's because of Chris Davis, the pesky Baltimore Orioles slugger who just won't let Cabrera catch him in the home run column.
Currently, Cabrera's hitting .357, an otherworldly number when paired with 43 home runs and a staggering 130 RBI. Davis is checking in at a stellar .302 in the batting average column, but has 46 home runs and 118 RBI. He's three ahead of Miggy and doesn't appear to be slowing down.
Despite being Cabrera's main impediment to a history-making second straight Triple Crown, Davis is actually rooting for the feat to happen. "As far as me being the obstruction for him doing it again, I hope he does do it again," Davis said. "That would be awesome. He's a great hitter. He deserves everything that he gets."
He continued to explain why that doesn't violate his moral code as a competitor. "My goal is not to go out there and keep Miguel Cabrera from winning the Triple Crown. It's to do everything I can to put us in position to win, whether that means I hit 10 more home runs or two more home runs. I've had a productive year so far, but if we don't make the playoffs, it doesn't really mean a lot."
If Cabrera is able to snag his second Triple Crown, he will become only the third player in MLB history to accomplish the feat twice. Rogers Hornsby won it in 1922 and 1925, followed by Ted Williams who did it in 1942 and 1947.
