As if Caroline Wozniacki needed more attention.

Two days after an Ireland newspaper reported that Wozniacki broke up with boyfriend Rory McIlroy - which the couple subsequently denied - Wozniacki played her first-round match in the U.S. Open against Chinese qualifier Duan Yingying.

Wozniacki, a former No. 1 women's player in the world who is seeded eighth in the tournament, had her struggles against Yingying. After cruising through the first set, Wozniacki found herself down 5-2 in the second. She had to rally to win the last five games for a tough 6-2, 7-5 victory.

But her game wasn't the most criticized aspect of her first-round match.

USA TODAY Sports reported the Twitter uproar over Wozniacki's outfit. A sample of some of the tweets:

From @scarebaby: "Caroline Wozniacki's dress is truly atrocious! #usopen"

A reply from Mike Shaw, @rockmole: " '@scarebaby: Caroline Wozniacki's dress is truly atrocious! #usopen' Just turned on,agree, looks like a maid"

Blue Clay Tennis (@BlueClayTennis) said: "Someone explain the thought process behind @CaroWozniacki's dress? It's awful. Just. Awful."

And from Rob Winston (@Rob_Winston): "Caroline Wozniacki's dress is the ugliest thing I've ever seen. Sumo wrestler meets diner waitress. #UsOpen"

Even the USA TODAY Sports report, which first said the negative response to Wozniacki's attire was an overreaction, then slowly came to the negative side itself when it discovered the oval cutout at Wozniacki's ribs on both sides of her dress.

"Other than giving her side equal time in the tanning department, what is it there for?" USA TODAY Sports said. "What possessed designer Stella McCartney to say, 'I think this dress needs an oval with an 8-inch circumference right above the flank?' Was she trying to live down to her dad's worst output, like Ebony and Ivory and Spies Like Us?"

Ironically, when asked about her tougher-than-expected first-round match, Wozniacki replied, "I'm happy to be through. I think everyone that you asked today would just say it was a day of survival and a day to get through.

"It's not about being pretty. It's about just getting the job done. I did that, so I'm happy about that."

There were plenty of critics who agreed with that assessment.
