Ray Rice may have to hope for a lot of injuries at the running back position this season because his latest chance seems to have gone by the wayside.

The Browns moved running back Shaun Draughn from the practice squad to the active roster a day before their season-opening, 31-10 loss to the Jets on Sunday, Pro Football Talk reported.

Browns Coach Mike Pettine Doesn't Rule Out Signing Ray Rice

The Browns, whose running back coach Wilbert Montgomery was Rice's former coach with the Ravens, were the front-runners this season to sign Rice.

Instead, Rice's reputation may be damaged permanently by the video showing him strike former fiancée and now-wife Janay Palmer in an Atlantic City casino elevator in Feb. 2014. The blow knocked her unconscious and another video showed him dragging her out of the elevator and leaving her on the floor.

Draughn last played a full season in 2012 with the Chiefs but has played a combined 13 games since, according to Pro Football Talk. He played in Baltimore with Rice in 2013 but appeared in just three games. Last season, Draughn played in 10 games with three teams, carrying the ball 10 times for 19 yards in four games with the Chargers.

Draughn was among the final cuts the Browns made to get down to their 53-man roster. They subsequently added the 6-foot, 205-pound RB to their practice squad. He played in Sunday's game against the Jets, carrying the ball once for 4 yards.

Rice has not played since 2013, when he had a career-low 610 rushing yards. He originally received a two-game suspension from the league for his domestic violence charge (that was later dropped). When the video of the punch came out, the Ravens released Rice and the league suspended him indefinitely.

That suspension ultimately was overturned before last year was over, but no teams have yet allowed the three-time Pro Bowler to try out.
