NFL training camps are open, and for millions of people worldwide their fantasy football preparation has begun in earnest. Here at Sports World News we will break down all 32 NFL teams in terms of their fantasy value. Readers will find the must-own players in every format, the sleepers in specific formats, and hidden gems only necessary for those in very deep leagues.
Today's preview will be on the New York Jets. As always, average draft position (ADP) is pulled from FantasyPros.com.
5 Running Backs' Roles Just Changed Dramatically
Must Owns
Brandon Marshall, WR (ADP: 59): Marshall was a much higher pick when he was in Chicago catching passes from Jay Cutler. He should still be a highly productive receiver with the Jets, but any time spent away from Cutler has had a negative effect on Marshall’s career. Ryan Fitzpatrick is not a prolific passer, but Marshall’s TD numbers should still be useful.
Chris Ivory, RB (ADP: 67): Ivory is the most exciting Jet for fantasy purposes. Todd Bowles has come in as the new coach and recognized the bruising talent right in front of him, and doesn’t look like he will have to cede carries to guys like Chris Johnson.
5 Players Boosted By An Injury Or Coach's Decision
Last year he averaged 4.1 yards per carry, and that was the lowest of his career. He is the obvious goal-line back, but he can strike from long range too. Ivory is a possible breakout candidate to join the elite category.
Eric Decker, WR (ADP: 102): Decker will slide into the No. 2 receiver role this season for Gang Green, where he should benefit from less attention. He is not an exciting pick, but Decker is consistent.
He should catch more balls in Chan Gailey’s offense, which involves a faster pace and more short throws. Decker is a possession receiver, and will benefit from this scheme. He should wind up as a strong WR2 on teams with good RBs.
Sleepers (Best Format)
Defense/Special Teams (ADP: 149): Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie are back, giving the Jets one of the top secondaries in the NFL. This would be a top-5 fantasy defense if DE Sheldon Richardson didn’t get himself suspended. There’s no telling how long he will be out, so that knocks down the Jets’ sack total. These guys will limit points, but they may not be a high-turnover unit.
Deep Finds (Best Format)
Zac Stacy, RB, Standard (ADP: 328): Stacy is the third-string back for now, but he ran well in the preseason, and is just one year removed from a seven-touchdown season with the Rams.
Devin Smith, WR, PPR (ADP: 337): This rookie wideout will probably miss the first two weeks of the season, but when he’s back he might be a playmaker. Smith has exceptional speed, and he’ll benefit from the attention Marshall and Decker draw on the outside.
