Matt Simms was feverish.

In preseason Week 3, the 26-year-old entered in the fourth quarter and went 5-for-5 for 65 yards and a touchdown. Thursday was his opportunity to prove he's worthy of a spot on an NFL roster.

"I am excited about it, I really am," he said before the game, per WGR. "Yeah, I have had eight passes [this preseason]. They've been a good eight passes, though, you know.

"So just got to go out, execute, run the play as well as I can that [Greg Roman] calls and go from there."

Then, this happened.

Simms finished the night 22-of-38 for 223 yards and zero TDs. The most damning statistic was his three fumbles, none more farcical than the one pictured above.

"Things like that at this level of the game just can't happen," Simms said after the game, per the team's official website. "I'm the quarterback and it starts with me and ends with me. It was just unfortunate because on two of those occasions we were moving the ball really well.

"We were dictating to them and kind of keeping the pace the way we wanted to and pushing them around on the offensive line and in critical situations that just can't happen."

Tyrod Taylor, Matt Cassel and EJ Manuel were all above Simms on the Bills' depth chart entering preseason Week 4.

Nothing was done on Thursday to change that, potentially ending Simms' tenure in Buffalo.
